Barry Russell and ‘The Hoplites’
The Team Spirit Award is a true reflection of the legend Barry was and the Oxfam Trailwalker legacy he leaves behind.
Barry Russell passed away whilst participating in Oxfam Trailwalker Brisbane 2011, his fifth Oxfam Trailwalker event with his team The Hoplites. Barry was a passionate and energetic fundraiser for Oxfam, and over their five events, The Hoplites raised more than $70,000 to support those less fortunate around the world. The team were committed to training together and always finished the event as a complete team of four. Much of The Hoplites‘ success can be attributed to their dedicated support crew, who were actively involved in all aspects of the Oxfam Trailwalker journey, from fundraising to training and the event itself.
We awarded Jill, Barry’s wife, and The Hoplites the first Team Spirit Award at the Brisbane Awards Night in honour of Barry’s memory and legacy.

Team ‘Five By Five’
Comprising three brothers and a brother-in-law and walking in their 3rd Oxfam Trailwalker event, ‘Five by Five’ conducted over 10 different fundraising initiatives involving friends, family, colleagues and their local community. Team members Grant Bickerton, Greg Irvine, Phil Irvine and Stephen Irvine clocked over 1800km in training together and raised over $20,000, surpassing their original target by $14,000 – this team truly embodies the spirit of the event!
Here’s what team leader, Greg Irvine, had to say about receiving the award:
“Five by Five feel very excited and honoured to have received the Team Spirit Award. I couldn’t have asked for a better team of guys – all pitching in, training hard, dedicated to fundraising, and having fun every step of the way. But our team was so much more than just us 4 walkers. We wouldn’t have achieved much without our wonderful support crew, families, friends, workplaces and ever-helpful Oxfam staff. Thank you everybody! Barry Russell left some big shoes to fill, and we feel humbled to have been chosen to honour his memory.”
